This is how the ICAO language test works at Vimana
The ICAO language test is organized as follows:
Once you have purchased the language test here in the store, you will be given access to our online appointment booking system. There you will see all available dates and can freely choose and set a date for the approx. 45-minute exam. You can specify whether you would like to take the exam at our premises or online via Zoom.
Of course, you can also select a date for the exam directly and will then be redirected to pay the fees.
You will then receive an appointment confirmation and an email with further information about the test. This includes sending us a scan of your ID card and signing a GDPR form and sending it back to us by email.
Your examiner will meet you at zoom at the agreed time. Please log in at least 5 minutes beforehand and check your audio and video settings.
First, your personal data will be recorded for the subsequent certificate issue and an ID check will be carried out. Please have your ID and your license (if available) ready.
Then the exam starts and in the first part you will be asked 12, 16 or 18 questions, which you answer in a relaxed manner. These include general questions, for example about your flight training, your flying history, your last or upcoming flight or your favorite destinations. You will also be shown two pictures that you will be asked to describe. You will read out radio frequencies and spell letters using the NATO alphabet. In addition, two ATIS announcements may be played, the content of which you will note down and reproduce. Finally, you will hear excerpts from the radio traffic, which you will be asked to read back.
The second part consists of a 15-minute free conversation with the language examiner. The complete exam is recorded (audio only).
If you have opted for the Level 4 ONLY exam, you will only be played 12 questions. The content is shorter, easier to understand and shorter to answer. The tasks for interpreting ATIS announcements, for example, are completely omitted. The subsequent interview also only lasts 10 minutes. However, the final result is capped at operational level 4.
After the exam, your performance will be assessed and, if you wish, you will receive your ICAO language certificate by email on the same day, otherwise within a maximum of 2 working days, together with all the documents you need to register your certificate. During the follow-up assessment, your ICAO language level will be determined and issued, which corresponds to your language skills – i.e. Level 4, Level 5 or Level 6. Exception: For the Level 4 exam, a maximum of Level 4 will be confirmed.

Frequently asked questions
about the ICAO language test
At Vimana, we know exactly how to master the path to the cockpit and the dream job of a pilot – based on our own experience!
On the one hand, we offer our training software for this in our webshop. In addition to extensive elearning and countless exercises, it also includes sample exams. You can also book online coaching with an English teacher.
We will certify your language competence up to ICAO Level 6.
This list only includes inspectors and inspection bodies for which the LBA is the supervisory authority. In our case, however, this is the Austrian Austro Control GmbH in Vienna. Nevertheless, our inspections are recognized without restriction by the LBA and the local aviation authorities in Germany.
No, our testing system does not require you to commit to a specific level in advance. After the exam, you will receive a certificate for the level that corresponds to your language level. It is therefore not the case that if you do not reach the desired level, the exam will be graded as “failed” and you will have to take the exam again (except for level 3 and below).
- Your language tester will contact you via Skype or zoom on the agreed test date. First, some personal data will be entered into the system and a screenshot of you and your ID card will be taken for ID verification. The examiner will then give you some final instructions about the exam and you can ask questions. The exam will then begin:
- First, 18 randomly selected questions are read out to you by the computer, to which you answer freely. These are aviation-related questions, but not technical questions.
- The questions are linked to your aviation background, i.e. if you are a student pilot still in training, you will be confronted with different questions than holders of a PPL private pilot license. Holders of a CPL or ATPL license can expect different questions, tailored to the general aviation or commercial aviation background that you have and feel most comfortable with.
- In each case, you must describe what you see in a picture twice, spell it according to the NATO alphabet and answer general questions about your personal aviation reference.
- If you are not a student pilot or are only aiming for level 4, there are then 2 ATIS interpretations and 2 tasks from the Listening Comprehension section, where you have to reproduce a radio message (commercial aviation) or a short conversation between 2 pilots.
- For student pilots there are therefore only 16 questions in total and for L4 exams only 12 questions.
- This is followed by a 15-minute interview with the examiner. There are no fixed topics.
- In the L4 only exam, this interview only lasts 10 minutes.
- At the end of the examination, it is assessed by the examiner and then forwarded to the second examiner (LPLE). The second examiner then also assesses it and determines the final level achieved.
- You will then receive your language certificate by email 1 to 2 working days later.
No, except for level 3 and below, you will simply be certified at the level that corresponds to your language level. Example: You indicate that you would like to reach L6. If the exam then shows that your language competence does not correspond to level 6, the exam is not “worthless” and must be repeated, but instead a level corresponding to less than level 6 will be certified in the certificate.
Yes, at any time. There is no difference in the test.
Yes, that is not a problem. However, you will have to apply for a new flight license in any case.
Yes, this is possible up to 90 days before the expiry date.
Unfortunately, the FCL.055 ICAO language test is not recognized for air traffic controllers. However, in a letter dated 02.02.2021, the BAF announced that it will also recognize language examinations for AFISOs conducted in accordance with FCL.055 until further notice. Please refer to the BAF link provided here. Nevertheless, we strongly recommend that you clarify independently with us before taking the exam whether the exam taken here is still recognized with reference to the letter from the BAF available here: https://www.baf.bund.de/SharedDocs/Downloads/DE/Publikationen_BAFReferate/SOP/sop_FSPersAV_AFISO_Sprache.pdf?__blob=publicationFile&v=2
