From ATPL to MPL – opportunities and requirements for the path to the cockpit

MPL pilot training at the European Flight Academy
The MPL (Multi-Crew Pilot License) training at the European Flight Academy entitles the holder to work for a Lufthansa Group airline after successful completion. These include Lufthansa Airline, Lufthansa CityLine and Austrian Airlines.
In order to be admitted to the two-year training course, the basic vocational examination (BU) and Group Qualification (GQ) at DLR in Hamburg must be passed. Once this has been achieved, four training phases follow, which are completed with a type rating. Once this has been achieved, nothing stands in the way of subsequent deployment in a cockpit of the airlines mentioned.
If the MPL selection at DLR in Hamburg does not work out, you can apply for ATPL training at the European Flight Academy.

ATPL pilot training at the European Flight Academy
Successful completion of ATPL training (Airline Transport Pilot License) qualifies you for a career at Eurowings. You also have the opportunity to apply for a position as a co-pilot on the open market.
To be admitted to this route, you must successfully pass the Basic Qualification (BQ) and Corporate Qualification (CQ) at Interpersonal in Hamburg.
The almost two-year training at the European Flight Academy ends with the Multi Crew Cooperation. Successful completion of the course is followed by the type rating and entry into the world of work as a co-pilot.

ATPL training at a private flight school
Another way into the cockpit is to train as a commercial pilot at a private flight school. This usually ends with the so-called frozen ATPL, which qualifies you to work as a co-pilot. You can then apply for jobs on the open market with various airlines (including Eurowings, Condor, Austrian, SWISS, etc. depending on the recruitment situation).
The duration of training varies from flight school to flight school and also depends on your personal performance level. As a rule, it takes around 20 to 26 months to complete the training. You can start at any time and almost immediately, as the often lengthy selection process of the airlines is no longer necessary.
The private flight school route is a good alternative, which a large number of pilots worldwide have chosen. Once you have completed your training, you can reapply to Eurowings or the Lufthansa Group, even if you were not successful in the previous selection process.
If you would like to take this route, we recommend that you look at various flight schools on site. Get a clear picture before you sign a training contract.

How can I apply?
The following prerequisites are required for admission to selection both via DLR and Interpersonal:

  • General/subject-specific university entrance qualification (Abitur)
  • Fluency in English
  • Fluency in German
  • At least 18 years of age at the start of training
  • Permanent residence permit with unrestricted work permit within the EU and Switzerland

For ATPL training at the EFA, you also need a medical fitness check, including an eye test.

No matter which route you choose, Vimana will help you prepare accordingly. At Vimana, you will find the right training software and the right seminar for both DLR selections and the Interpersonal route. All information and offers can be found here on the website.

Our recommendation – the AeronautX flight school in Linz
One flight school that we work with and can recommend is AeronautX, located directly at Linz Airport. The training there is characterized by the highest quality and competence, coupled with state-of-the-art training equipment (simulators and aircraft). Unique in the German-speaking world to date is that a complete selection and screening preparation is already fully integrated into the training process.
With a degree there, you will be perfectly prepared for all common selection procedures of the various airlines.

We will be happy to advise you on choosing the right flight school!
